March 13, 2020 Update From State Officials Regarding COVID-19

During a COVID-19 conference call with Minnesota schools held March 13, the Minnesota Department of Health and the Minnesota Department of Education continued to recommend that schools remain open.  This is also the current recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control.

They are also recommending schools take additional steps to minimize the spread of disease. We have a COVID-19 response team of school and district personnel which are meeting at least twice a week. The response team will review new recommendations, work to determine how our Duluth Schools will implement and share that information quickly with staff and families.

We also heard from Governor Tim Walz this afternoon regarding cancelling or postponing social gatherings of over 250 people.  The Duluth Schools are cancelling or postponing events of over 250 people from now through April 12, 2020 with plans to revisit as the situation progresses. Please check for school-specific cancellations on your school website and through other school communications.

Also today, the MN State High School League announced that effective from now through April 6, 2020 participation in spring sports and activities is limited to practice and tryouts only.  Check their website for further details.

To reduce the impact of this virus on students, families and staff, they are continuing to recommend that people who feel unwell stay home, cover coughs and sneezes and wash their hands often with warm water and soap or sanitizer.

We care about the health of you and your family.  We recognize staff may have individual questions and unique medical circumstance.  Our Human Resources Department and district leaders will work to address employment questions that may be related to the COVID-19 situation.  Please check the CDC website, they have information for people at risk for serious illness from COVID-19.

Things are changing and happening very fast - thank you for your support as we work to respond.
