CFO and Business Services Director Cathy Erickson has accepted the position of Director of School Finance at the Minnesota Department of Education.
“I have great respect for Cathy and appreciate all that she has done for the Duluth Public Schools,” Superintendent John Magas said. “It is certainly bittersweet to see her go, but we are all extremely proud to have had her leadership these past three years, as well as her ascending to the top education finance position at the Department of Education.”
Erickson joined Duluth Public Schools in the fall of 2018 during financial turmoil. Under Erickson's direction, the district has increased its general unrestricted fund balance from around $399,000 at the end of June 2018 to around $3.9 million today.
During Erickson's tenure, the district was able to sell Historic Old Central High School to a responsible developer and received special legislation to allow the district to bond for the new construction of a transportation center, a district services center, and an improved facilities building already on the Central campus, saving the district millions of dollars in the long run.
“Through her work here over the past three years, Cathy has done so much to improve systems and right our fiscal ship. We are deeply indebted to her for her service and know that she will be an asset to the entire state,” Magas said.
