Duluth East/Denfeld Teacher Receives $5,000 Gold Star Teacher Award

Kim Olson is the recipient of the 2020 Goldfine Gold Star Teacher Award.  Andy Goldfine made the announcement during a live stream event Wednesday evening.

Olson teaches Health Occupations courses as part of the Duluth Public Schools Career & Technical Education program.

Duluth East Principal Danette Seboe nominated Olson for the Award and said during the ceremony, “In recent months the COVID-19 crisis has reminded us of the essential need for a highly qualified medical establishment. Extensive coverage by the media has highlighted the extraordinary contributions of those health care providers who have been and continue to be silent heroes in our community. As a result, the public has become keenly aware of their importance to society.  Kim Olson has played a key role in ensuring our future health care providers preparedness, even in these circumstances. She has permanently left a positive imprint on the students she has taught.”

In the nomination materials, one of Olson’s students says, “Every student wants a teacher that cares about them and wants to see them succeed.  Kim Olson, my EMR teacher, goes above and beyond when it comes to caring about a student’s success and their well-being.”  Says a colleague, “Never in my career have I seen a teacher who literally gives her entire being to the success of her students.  The ultimate goal of any teacher is to inspire and open up the world to students.  Mrs. Olson does that and surpasses every benchmark.”  And another colleague says, “She donates her time and money to the HOSA program and spends numerous weekends bringing students to HOSA competitions.  I remember her texting me to find out if I knew the suit jacket size of a student since he didn’t have appropriate clothing for the competition and she wanted him to feel confident.  He went on to win an award in his health field and she was so excited she cried during the honors event.”

Olson is the recipient of the MN Association for Career and Technical Administrators Outstanding Educator Award and a Future Health Care Professionals (HOSA) Outstanding Advisor of the Year Award.

2020 Gold Star Teacher Award Ceremony May 27

The Goldfine family presents $5,000 annually to an outstanding teacher within the Duluth Public School system. Manley and Lillian Goldfine established this award through the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation in 2006 to recognize public school teachers who inspire their students and provide a strong foundation for educational, personal and professional success.

The 2020 Award recipient will be announced during a live stream ceremony:
Wednesday May 27, 2020 7:00PM

Congratulations to this year’s nominees:
>>Ed Lewis, Denfeld High School
>>Doug Antonich, Ordean East Middle School
>>Barb Paquette, Residential/Day Treatment
>>Scott Forbort, Duluth Area Learning Center
>>Katie Britton, Lincoln Park Middle School
>>Kim Olson, Duluth East High School

Manley and Lillian Goldfine established a fund for the award in their belief that great teachers lay the foundation for the future success of their students in further education, productive careers and well-rounded enjoyment of life.  The award is intended for the personal use of the recipient and there are no “strings” attached. This year the award will go to a secondary school teacher; last year it went to an elementary school teacher. This is the 14th year for the Award.

Teachers are nominated and selected for the award through a competitive application process based on several criteria, including impact in the classroom, school and community, and their efforts to pursue professional development.
