Open Enrollment

Open enrollment is when someone lives outside the boundaries of Duluth Public Schools and would like to attend a school in the district. These requests are approved or denied based on many factors, including but not limited to space availability at the school requested.

Once accepted for enrollment, the student does not have to reapply each year. Transportation for out of district students must be provided by the family.

If you live in Duluth and would like to transfer schools, please refer to the intra-district transfer webpage.

Long-Term Enrollment Commitment

When you choose to open enroll in our district, we plan for your child’s future with us from their first day through high school graduation.

  • No Re-Application Needed: Once your child is accepted into the district, they are officially enrolled through Grade 12. You do not need to re-apply every year.

  • Stability by Design: We approve applications based on long-term space availability. We want to ensure that once a student starts at a school, they can stay there and matriculate to middle and high school alongside their peers.

  • Placement Preferences: If your first-choice school is at capacity for future years, we will look to your second-choice preference to ensure a stable, long-term placement.

Legal Reference: Per Minnesota Statute 124D.03, families may request a specific school or program, and pupils are not required to submit periodic applications once enrolled in a nonresident district.
