Duluth School Board Selects John Magas for Final Superintendent Candidate
Contract negotiations will begin, final contract scheduled for April approval
The Duluth School Board identified John Magas as its final choice for superintendent during a special meeting at Historic Old Central High School in Duluth March 25, 2020. The vote followed a months-long process which included hiring a search firm, a public process to develop a leadership profile, input from community groups and organizations and two rounds of public interviews.
Contract negotiations with Magas will begin immediately; the Board is scheduled to approve a final contract in April. The new superintendent will assume his responsibilities July 1, 2020.
Magas’s experience includes Associate Superintendent of Continuous Improvement for the Green Bay Area School District in Wisconsin; Director of Secondary Teaching, Learning and Equity for the Sun Prairie Area School District in Wisconsin; Principal for the Appleton Area School District in Wisconsin and Assistant Principal for the Toppenish School District in Washington.
He holds an Educational Specialist Degree from the University of Wisconsin – Madison; Washington State Principal Certification from Gonzaga University; a Master’s Degree in ESL/Bilingual Education and Teaching Certificate from Heritage College; a Bachelor of Arts Degree Spanish Major/English Minor from Northern Michigan University and Spanish courses from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico.
He has been a participant/site lead for the Wallace Foundation Principal Pipeline Program; a member of the Wisconsin Urban Leadership Institute Steering Committee; participant in the Collaboration to Ensure New Teacher Success, NEA/Carnegie Foundation Network and a School Administrator’s Alliance Assessment Project Team Member.
