What is “Safe Routes to School”?
SRTS programs improve safety, reduce traffic and improve air quality near schools by focusing on the 6 E’s:
  • Evaluation: Assessing local needs and identifying solutions.
  • Education: Teaching children and families about safety and the benefits of walking and biking.
  • Encouragement: Getting kids excited about walking and biking through events, activities, and inform children and adults about the personal and community benefits of walking to school.
  • Equity: Ensuring that all students have access to safe routes.
  • Engagement: Involving the community in decision-making.
  • Engineering: Improving infrastructure to make routes safer (signage, crosswalks, signals, etc.).
