Curriculum and Instruction
Duluth Public Schools uses a variety of curricular and instructional resources to support student learning. Curriculum constitutes the "what" is being taught such as standards, benchmarks and outcomes, while instruction constitutes the "how", or the way teachers will help students meet these goals. In Minnesota, state standards for content areas are written by state committees and approved by legislative vote on a regular review and adoption basis. Local standards such as World Languages, Health, Industrial Technology, and Family and Consumer Science, are determined by local committees and community members and are based on national standards.
To support the standards, resources are adopted through a detailed process and professional development is designed to help guide instruction and learning for our students. The timeline for curriculum review, evaluation, and adoption can be found on our Curriculum Review and Adoption Timeline document. Each content area is led by a specialist and their committee to review and implement the curriculum and instruction for that content area.
