Dear families,

John Magas headshot

Every new school year is a time of new beginnings, filled with a sense of hope, excitement, and wonderment about what the year will bring.

I started my first year as superintendent of schools on July 1, 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. For the first two years of my tenure, everything revolved around COVID-19 and what was best for our students. Now that we are back in the groove of a typical school year I am focused on equity and inclusion and doing the work to make sure all of our students achieve at a high level.

There is nothing that makes me happier than to see a student's face light up as they have made the connection of learning something new. As we spend time together this year and in the years to come, I look forward to getting to know students, families and staff and I can’t wait to see the light of many learners each and every day.

As we learn more about best practices for guiding and positively shaping student behavior, we have revised our responses to reflect this increased awareness. We also realize that all systems have room for improvement. We are in a state of continual refinement to ensure that our practices are bias-free and focused on building success for each of our learners.

We believe that by working together in these efforts, we will create meaningful relationships, engaging learning, and a positive school climate and culture. The end results will be increased happiness and academic achievement for each student of the Duluth Public Schools

Sincerely,

John Magas
Superintendent
