Reconstruction of Myers-Wilkins Elementary Gymnasium Set to Begin Next Week
The reconstruction of the Myers-Wilkins Elementary School gymnasium is scheduled to commence next week, with an anticipated completion date in January. The project, estimated to cost approximately $660,000, will be paid for through the district’s insurance.
On Sept. 13, 2024, a vehicle crash caused significant damage to the gymnasium, creating a hole in the wall and damaging the floor. Since the incident, the gymnasium has been closed. In the interim, students have participated in physical education classes outdoors when weather conditions allow, and alternative indoor spaces have been utilized when necessary.
Project Details:
- Wall Reconstruction: A 60-foot section of the wall from ceiling to floor will be replaced.
- Floor Refurbishment: The gymnasium floor will undergo refurbishment, with damaged boards being replaced and the entire surface repainted.
- Logistics: A crane will be stationed on E. 11th Street near the back of the school to facilitate the delivery of supplies down the slope.
- Timeline: The gymnasium is expected to reopen for use after the holiday break. The project is slated for completion by January 21, with the exterior brickwork being the final component.
This reconstruction effort aims to restore the gymnasium to a safe and functional state, ensuring that students can resume their physical education activities in a dedicated indoor space.
