Duluth School Board Honors Sara Lemon, National FCCLA Silver Medal Recipient

    Sara is a student at Duluth East High School and recently attended the FCCLA National Leadership Conference in Nashville, TN.  At the conference she presented a service project on the dangers of texting and driving and was awarded a Silver Medal in her division.  

The project included a survey, public awareness materials and community partnerships.  She’s planning to expand the project to present at the 2014 State Leadership Conference and would like it to include having students and teachers sign a pledge not to Text and Drive. 

   FCCLA stands for Family, Career and Community Leaders in America.  It’s a national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work, and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education.


Twin Ports CFO Group Works to Find Cost-Saving Opportunities

   A recently established Twin Ports Chief Financial Officers (CFO) Group is working to find efficiencies and cost-saving opportunities.  Initial members include:

Bill Hanson, Director of Business Services, ISD 709

Janet Hanson, Vice Chancellor of Administration and Finance, University of Wisconsin Superior

Al Finlayson, VP Finance & Administration, Lake Superior College

Patrick Flattery, VP for Finance, College of St. Scholastica

Mike Seymour, Vice Chancellor for Finance and Operations, University of Minnesota Duluth

Peggy Spehar, Chief Financial Officer, City of Duluth

   UMD’s Mike Seymour initiated the group, modeling it after similar concepts in higher education. “The goal is to share expertise, strategy, ways to cooperate, and ways to save money,” says Seymour.

   Bill Hanson, Director of Business Services for ISD 709, is looking forward to laying the

groundwork for collaboration.  “When we create efficiencies, like sharing spaces or sharing

staff, we’re also sharing ideas on best practices in an effort to be good stewards of public money,” says Hanson.

   Members are discussing opportunities to share the cost of training, IT, security, and facilities expertise.


Peller Receives 2013 Spirit of Advising Award

Shonda Peller, Denfeld High School, is the recipient of the Minnesota FCCLA-HERO 2013 Spirit Of Advising Award.  She was recognized by the State Executive Council and received the award at the 2013 National Leadership Conference.  Shonda has been an FCCLA Advisor for six years and during that time four of her students have been elected state officers and seven have qualified for the national convention.
