Greg Irons Teacher/Staff Award Nominations Requested

Know a great educator who deserves a pat on the back or some special recognition? Consider nominating him/her for the Greg Irons Teacher/Staff Award. Named after a former ISD 709 teacher, the Greg Irons Award recognizes teachers/school staff who demonstrate their belief that all students have worth and the desire to succeed and that responsibility, sincerity, honesty and hard work are the foundation of a person's life. Past recipients have received a cash award of $500.

Nominations may be made by students, teachers, other school staff, parents or community members and are due to the Community Foundation by January 15, 2014. United Way of Greater Duluth is holding a Barnes & Noble Bookfair on November 16 to raise funds for their Big Red Bookshelf last year the Bookshelf provided 11,523 free books to area children.  A percentage of Barnes & Noble purchases will benefit United Way of Greater Duluth and the Big Red Bookshelf.

Meet Clifford the Big Red Dog
The Duluth Heritage Sports Center (DHSC) will host the Lake Superior Conference (LSC) Boys Hockey Jamboree Tuesday November 19. Superior, Proctor, North Shore and Ashland will play in the early games, while Denfeld, Marshall, Hermantown & Cloquet will square off in the nightcaps. 

   In addition to the hockey jamboree, dance lines from Denfeld, Hermantown, Marshall and Superior will perform in the Clyde Iron Restaurant Event Center. The restaurant is offering a pizza buffet for $12 that includes pizza, soda, admission to the dance line event and the hockey game. The buffet is available from 6:00PM to 8:00PM.

   Ticket prices for the games alone are $6 for adults and $4 for students. Game schedules are available at



East High School graduate Nate Rendulich, an accomplished photographer, was featured in a recent issue of Lake Superior Magazine in an article titled "Like Father, Like Son.”  Nate's time-lapsed photo of an aging barn was included in the article and was posted with The Associated Press while he was still in high school.  It was picked up by news organizations worldwide.
