Ordean East Student Receives Apollo Gilruth Continuum Award

Path to Aviation Centennial student Sarah Mason, Ordean East Middle School, received the Apollo-Gilruth Continuum Award for academic excellence in March. The Duluth Aviation Institute along with the Ordean East science teachers presented eleven lessons in aviation science this past semester. Sarah excelled in all classroom activities, extra credit projects, 11 plane quizzes and the post-test. The top 15% students who excelled throughout the program were rewarded with a Young Eagles Flight from Sky Harbor Airport.

The Duluth Aviation Institute’s vision is community inspired and enriched by the art and science of aviation. Robert Gilruth, Father of Human Space Flight and child citizen of Duluth, was inspired in his youth to become an aeronautical engineer. As the first director of the Johnson Space Center, he led the national effort to achieve the objective of “landing man on the moon and bringing them safely back to earth.”

Duluth East Hockey Players Inspire Portman Hockey Mite 2 Team

Several members of the Duluth East Boys Hockey Team joined the Portman Hockey Mite 2 Team’s end of the year celebration at East High School. Alex Trapp (senior captain) was asked to recruit a few of the varsity hockey players to battle the Portman M2's in a game of floor hockey in the gym. The Portman kids and parents enjoyed having so many Greyhounds join them on a Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds spent almost two hours playing floor hockey, coaching, and then joining the M2's for pizza. Jack Hughes, Portman player, said it was best time he's ever had playing hockey.
