Duluth East Birchwood Choir and A’Capella Choir Earn Superior Ratings
   Congratulations to the students of the Duluth East Birchwood Choir and A'Cappella Choir for their outstanding performances at the Minnesota State High School League Region 7AA Large Group Vocal Music Contest this month. Both choirs received Superior Ratings, with A'Cappella receiving two perfect "40" scores.

Lester Park Elementary Teacher Reappointed to State Board of Teaching
   Governor Mark Dayton has reappointed Anne Krafthefer to the Minnesota State Board of Teaching.  Anne teaches at Lester Park Elementary School and has been with ISD 709 since 1991. She joins ten other teachers, administrators and members of the public who will work to ensure the state has qualified and professional teachers.

ACT Plus Writing Test for 11th Grade Students
Wednesday April 19, 2017 – Seated by 8:50AM
   Participation is expected of all 11th grade students except those exempted by their IEP and notified by their case managers.
·  Students at Denfeld and Duluth East:  9th, 10th, and 12th grade students will not attend school April 19 in order to accommodate the test.  11th grade students will follow a special test day schedule.
·  Students attending AEO, ALC and Residential Programs:  9th, 10th, and 12th Grade students will attend school as usual on April 19.  11th Grade students participating in the test should contact their guidance counselor or school principal to make arrangements.

Denfeld Robotics Team Receives Entrepreneurship Award  
   After 3 days of competition at the Iowa Regional, the DNA robotics team finished the qualification rounds in 9th place and became the 6th alliance captain during the alliance selections. They chose teams 525 and 6359 to join their alliance, the team was eliminated in their second quarterfinal round.
   At the awards ceremony, the team received the Entrepreneurship Award. This award recognizes the entrepreneurial spirit by celebrating a team that had developed the framework for a comprehensive business plan to scope, manage, and achieve team objectives.

Duluth East Daredevils Robotics Team Heading to World Championships
   The Duluth East Daredevils competed at the Northern Lights Regional in March, taking 2nd place in the event and receiving the Wildcard to attend the World Championships in St. Louis April 26-29.  Their second regional took place in Cedar Falls, Iowa where they were selected by the 1st place alliance and made it to the finals once more. The team is excited to go back to Worlds – last time they placed second and are hoping to do as well or better this time around!

Congdon Park Elementary Students Succeed at State MN PTA Reflections Program
Juri Lubovich:  1st Place - Photography Grades K-2
Annika Saur:  1st Place – Photography Grades 3-5
Edie Robinson:  2nd Place - Literature : Grades 3-5
Artwork by Juri Lubovich and Annika Saur will move on to the National PTA Reflections competition in Alexandria, VA.  Winners will be recognized and presented their award at the state ceremony this spring.
