ISD 709 Students Outperform National Average in ACT College Tests

     The ACT Assessment, a national college entrance exam, consists of tests in English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. ACT results are accepted by virtually all U.S. colleges and universities

     "Results show we're well above the national average and consistent with the state average," says Ed Crawford, Assistant Superintendent for ISD 709.

     ISD 709’s average composite score on the ACT was 23.0. The district's percentage of students meeting college readiness benchmarks was greater than the nation in all 4 areas which test readiness for college-level work, including College English Composition, College Algebra, College Biology and College Social Science.


2013 State MCA Reading, Math, Science Results

Priority and Focus Schools See Gains In Math

     The Minnesota Department of Education released results of the 2013 MCA Math, Reading and Science tests taken this spring.

     Laura MacArthur Elementary, a state Priority school, saw significant gains in Math. "The school has done a lot of work tracking student progress throughout the year and adjusting strategies based on the data," says Assistant Superintendent Ed Crawford. The school saw gains with all students and with all student subgroups.

     Lincoln Park Middle School and Piedmont Elementary, state Focus schools, also saw gains in Math overall and among some student subgroups.

     Overall, ten schools made gains in math and four schools scored above the state average. In the high schools, American Indian students saw a 28 percentage point increase in Math and scored well above the state average. While gains have been made, the district as a whole remains below the state average in Math.

     2013 was the first year of a new state Reading test and data will be used as a base line for comparison in upcoming years.

     In Reading, six ISD 709 schools scored above the state average. Statewide, reading scores went down due in part to more rigorous state standards and a new reading test implemented this year. Hispanic and Asian/Pacific students scored well above the state average. The district as a whole was about two percentage points below the state average in Reading.

     In Science, six schools showed improvement from last year and four scored well above the state average.

     In terms of closing the achievement gap between students of color and those that are not; students from poverty and those that are not; and students receiving special education services and those who don't, there is more work to be done.

     Crawford says ISD 709 will continue organized efforts to partner with parents and the community to support student achievement. He says the 4-Year Continuous Improvement Goals identified through the Think Kids initiative will help focus efforts and resources on raising student achievement and closing the achievement gap.
